Do you want to stop seeking answers and start living the top quality life you deserve?
Then this video is for you.
Hi, I’m Kenneth Benjamin. Over the next few minutes, I’ll share with you the essential secrets to happiness, fulfillment, and lifelong satisfaction it took me decades to discover.
You’ll learn how to chart your unique path to self-improvement and personal development, discover why it’s your needs that matter, and learn how to make the whole process fast and easy.
Let’s begin by talking about what happiness is and how you can get it.
What is Happiness?
In 1989, during a 14 month around-the-world trip, I made a discovery that would change my life.
Deep in rural Nepal, a week from the nearest roads, electricity, or indoor plumbing, I discovered something truly special: happy people.
Compared to my native wealthy Washington, DC suburbs, where happy people were hard to find, the people I met seemed happy. The question was, why?
The answer I discovered many years later was transformational, yet profoundly simple:
Happiness is when your life fulfills your needs.
The difficult question then was, “What are my needs?”
I explored ideas, from Plato to poetry, from mythology to Maslow, from Buddha to the Bible. Ultimately, science held the final key, in positive psychology and neurobiology.
But which theory was right? They all were.
What Do You Need to Be Happy?
Here’s the thing. As human beings, we all share the same basic needs, what I call your Happiness Essentials.
Happiness Essentials are the specific needs everyone must fulfill to be happy, like friends, adequate sleep, or a sense of accomplishment, just to name a few of the nearly sixty I’ve identified.
The problem is, and this is where everything you’ve tried before has let you down, every Happiness Essential is not equally important to everyone.
A Happiness Essential, like fame, that is the driving force for someone else might be of little interest to you.
Your personality, opportunities, and life experiences all shape the wonderfully unique person you are. It’s for this reason we each need our own unique path to happiness.
Why What You’ve Been Taught Doesn’t Work
The idea you’ve been taught, that there is just one single recipe for everyone’s happiness, is silly. It doesn’t make any more sense than a restaurant with only thing on the menu.
One restaurant says vegan pizza is the path to happiness. Another says it’s chicken tikka masala and nothing else will do. And somebody else claims it must be apple pie with vanilla ice cream, just like it’s always been.
Now, maybe one of those is your favorite food but isn’t it better to eat at restaurant with a full menu to choose from?
These one-size-fits-all, single-recipe solutions are why what you’ve been taught hasn’t brought you lasting happiness and why you’re here today seeking answers.
Let me show you a better way.
3 Steps to Happiness
Remember that happiness is when your life fulfills your needs.
There are 3 basic steps to fulfill your needs: discovery, planning, and action.
Discovery is where you determine what your needs are and which ones are most important to you. It’s also a good place to increase your self-awareness by identifying your personality strengths and weaknesses.
Planning is where you decide exactly what you’re going to do to fulfill your needs. You’ll make long-term plans and decide on short-term actions you can start taking right away.
And finally, action, where you put your plans into motion, build habits, and begin experiencing the happiness you desire.
Let’s go a bit deeper beginning with Discovery:
Discovering Your Needs
With nearly 60 Happiness Essentials to choose from, it may seem difficult to decide which one to work on first. However, in practice you can narrow your choices pretty quickly.
To begin with, once you think about it, you’ll find some needs which simply don’t interest you and you can safely ignore.
And many of your needs you’ll find already well satisfied.
What remains are the Happiness Essentials you haven’t spent enough time on to satisfy your needs.
It is by working on these that you’ll find happiness.
What Should You Be Doing to Be Happy?
Once you’ve narrowed your choices, how do you decide which need is first?
There are two factors:
How important that need is to you, and how far you are from fulfilling it.
It is this combination of importance and distance that determines your ideal route to happiness.
And this is where most people fall short today. We intuitively tend to work on those needs which are of high importance but are also pretty well fulfilled. At best, we end up with weak action on a slow path to happiness.
Let me give you an example.
One of my top unfulfilled needs was a healthy diet.
It was a top priority for me and I wasn’t very satisfied with how my diet was affecting my health.
I did the research, made a plan, and took action.
Six months later, I’ve largely fulfilled that need.
A healthy diet is still of high importance, and always will be, but it is no longer so unfulfilled.
Is there room to improve? Sure, but my diet is now a habit and there are other needs of similar importance but much further from fulfillment. It’s one of those needs that I’m working on now.
When you’re on your ideal path to happiness, you’re constantly working on the need that is both most important to you and most unfulfilled.
Planning for Your Happiness
Once you know your top need, it’s time to make some plans.
Start by visualizing your life with that need satisfied. This mental picture is your long-term goal.
With that goal in mind, start working back in time, each picture a little clearer until you’re ready to get into detailed planning.
At this point it’s useful to increase your knowledge by studying from experts in that field.
Once you have knowledge in hand, it’s time to plan some specific actions to start taking right away.
When I wanted to change my diet, I began by picturing how I want to look and feel in old age.
Then I worked backwards in time, thinking how I’d like to look and feel in 5 years, and in 1 year. Then I started to research and plan exactly how I’d get there, eventually settling on a specific steps to switch to a primal diet, which I found optimal.
As with the discovery phase, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to do this right. Make a clear plan with both long-term goals and short-term actions.
Most people tend to skip this step and with our busy lives, it’s easy to understand why but it’s also why there is so much trial and error. If you want to move smoothly towards happiness, make a plan first.
Taking Action to Be Happy
That leads us to the final step, Action.
Put your plan in motion. Start doing what you planned to do and start building the habits to make your changes stick.
Each step forward gives you two things: the immediate rewards of accomplishment and the deep satisfaction from the need you’re fulfilling.
Periodically, as you make progress, update your plans to take actions that keep you moving forward.
Over longer periods of time, go back to the Discovery step, review your top needs, and pick a second one to work on.
By following the Discovery, Planning, and Action formula I’ve just outlined, you’ll put yourself on your ideal path to lifelong happiness.
